A Word from the SGA President

Welcome to the Connecticut College Student Government Association Web site! On behalf of my fellow assembly members and students, thank you for taking the time to find out a little bit more about us.

I arrived at Connecticut College three years ago looking for a way to get involved in my new community. I was active in organizing events for my dorm and when the position of dorm senator opened up, I decided to run for the position and discover what went on in student government. I was amazed how important the meeting was. Three deans came and participated, just as they do every week. The college president and vice president have presented numerous times, as well as financial advisers, faculty, and staff seeking change or wishing to inform us about the work they have been doing on the students’ behalf. In my time on Student Government, I have been truly impressed by the responsibility and the influence that the Student Government Association has on campus.

We approved new student clubs and heard from the Executive Board about all the important things they were doing. Since that first meeting, the College has changed in many ways and the Student Government Association has been influential in many important initiatives:

• We were instrumental in convincing the faculty to start an Arabic program
• Helped manage the changeover from phone to keycard dorm access
• Appropriated $300,000 in student funds each year
• Provided a voice in the establishment of a new residential paraprofessional position
• Ran 3 blood drives per year, donating the most blood per capita of any college in Connecticut 
• Exercised our three votes on the College’s most influential committee (PPBC, responsible for College-wide funding).  

Fellow students, or anyone so inclined, please share your ideas for a better Connecticut College with us; we can’t change the things we don’t know about.
